Overall Department Direction

As a Supportability Engineer you’ll work within the Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) Directorate, a centre of excellence for our professional engineering capability, supporting naval programmes while proactively improving our support capabilities.

As part of the role you will be involved in two key areas of supportability analysis:

1. Level of Repair Analysis; determine optimal provision of repair and maintenance activities for equipment and systems.
2. Maintenance Task Analysis; determine the resources required to implement effective preventative and corrective maintenance tasks for equipment and systems.

Main Purpose of Role;
You will be involved in producing engineering outputs which consider the most suitable maintenance level for repairing/maintaining equipment and/or systems, identifying the depths at which repair, and overhaul tasks are to be undertaken, the skills required to carry out those repairs and/or overhaul tasks at each maintenance level, and the facility requirements to support that maintenance, including RS or NRS. Furthermore, as part of the role you will also be involved in the following;
• Producing maintenance analysis outputs to support periodical delivery to the customer iaw schedule dates.
• Producing detailed, procedural task narratives to comprise full sequence of task performance commensurate with the scope of the required maintenance task;
• Identifying of all S&TE including Portable Specialised Support Equipment/Ancillary Test Equipment, Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE); and any facilities required;
• Identifying numbers of personnel required and the respective skill levels, skill specialities, Man Hours and Elapsed Time;
• Identifying all hazards, warnings and cautions plus safety related issues including, legislative requirements under extant Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) and the mitigation of those risks; and
• Determine applicability of all relevant and appropriate Technical Documentation/Maritime Technical Instruction references necessary to complete the task.
• Identifying, understanding and managing technical supportability risks, issues and opportunities.
• Facilitating key stakeholders to see technical risks and issues through to resolution.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
You

• Ideally an ex-submarine operator with sound understanding of mechanical, electrical systems for naval application.
• Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
• Good understanding of MoD life cycle management with the ability to comprehend how the BAES design will impact the platform through life supportability, and ultimately availability for CASD.
• Membership of a professional body is desirable but not essential.
• Proficient in standard MS Office package Inc. Excel.
• Able to achieve security clearance.

Lastly, you’ll be an excellent communicator and be able to articulate complex technical and project management requirements to senior stakeholders. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate the motivation to drive issues to completion and be willing to continue your own professional development.
