Location – Lichfield, Whittington Barracks – Flexible location – requirement for travel for UK wide MOD sites.

Job Description
  • Provide technical assistance for design, construction, and maintenance of mechanical infrastructure including:

– Steam, High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW). Medium Temperature Hot Water (MTHW) Boilers and their distribution system, Compressed Air Systems

  • Provide technical support and advice to MOD/DIO customers requiring professional judgement to provide technical advice and direction, including current and future FM contracts and capital projects.
  • Undertake the risk management role for their area of responsibility, feeding into the risk register. This will include identification of vital risk and mitigation measures.
  • Support the Head Mechanical Infrastructure in the maintenance of DIO Mechanical Infrastructure Policy.
  • Maintain, review and update the relevant chapters of JSP 375, leading the relevant SSOW working groups and operation of the Assurance regime.
  • Review and update maintenance schedules.
  • Assessment of Authorising Engineers
  • Assurance: Conduct DSAA Reviews, review AE(Mech) Audits, and conduct ‘ad hoc’ reviews to support implementation of the SSoW identifying shortfalls and assisting in the preparation of action plans.
  • Assisting the Custodian of Chapter 4 to ensure document is extant (JSP375 Pt2 V3)
  • Accident/incident investigations including where necessary undertaking investigations, escalating where necessary and preparing corrective plans. Ensure alignment with DIO’s incident reporting system (IMS)
  • Where necessary, prepare and issue DIO Safety Alerts relating to mechanical infrastructure.
  • Act as the primary SQEP SME, engaging with internal and external partners and regulatory authorities and support MOD Defence Safety Authority and other MOD regulators requirements.
  • Develop and maintain MOD infrastructure maintenance schedules and provide compliance assurance.
  • Finish the required managerial and administrative activities on time.
  • Ensure training is kept up to date.
  • Respond to requests for management information, reports and returns in a timely manner
  • Maintain good administrative records.
  • Undertake assurance activities of mechanical assets, throughout the asset lifecycle, to monitor compliance with legislation, MOD/DIO Policy & Standards, and guidance material.
  • Escalate significate risks identified during the assurance activities and assist in the development of an action plans to remediate assurance finding.
  • Representation of DIO Technical Services at appropriate Mechanical related Committees, Working Groups, and Panels.  
Qualifications and Experience:
  • The post holder must be prepared to gain both NEBOSH and Auditing qualifications as well as MOD Safe Systems of work competencies through development and training if not already held.
Essential Criteria:
  • Professional qualification as either a Chartered, or Incorporated Mechanical Engineer (and demonstrably working towards CEng)
  • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering Institute
  • BSc (Hons) or BEng Degree or equivalent in relevant Engineering subject
  • Driving License – Access to remote defence locations without public transport is required of the role.

Highly Desirable:

  • Good working knowledge of IT systems including Office suite
  • Relevant Safety qualifications – eg. NEBOSH
  • Auditing qualification – ISO 9001 or equivalent
