Rate – Circa £38.00 per hour Umbrella Company or PAYE equivalent
Location – Leicester, UK
Hours – Typically 37.5 hours per week
Determination – Inside IR35
Security – UK BPSS Security Clearance Required to be in place

Job Purpose;

The Principal Designer provides support and technical guidance on a day to day basis for a team of multi-disciplined designers. Takes responsibility for ensuring delivery of all Piping deliverables used in discipline design work executed under the contract or project.

The role requires a good understanding of engineering and design practices as relevant to the discipline and is embedded in a design team often as the Design Lead.

The role requires excellent knowledge of CAD, written and verbal communications, depth of specialist knowledge and experience related to subject areas across multiple disciplines.

Key Competencies and Responsibilities;

The role takes diagnoses and resolves complex design issues spanning multiple systems/disciplines, provides specialist technical advice and guidance to others. This role is accountable for the delivery of fit for purpose designs consistent with the design brief.

The role must be fully aware of and adhere to Health & Safety standards and be fully familiar with all authorised documentation, Good Practice Guides and ISO standards.

  • To ensure the generation of project drawing deliverables as required for the Piping discipline including Layouts, Piping GA’s & Sections and Isometrics.
  • Ensuring that Designers, and CAD Operators are fully acquainted with the appropriate use of relevant applications (PDMS, AutoCAD, Spoolgen etc.)
  • The carrying out of checking of Designers and CAD Operators work in accordance with the Company / Project procedures.
  • Ability and experience of working on and maintaining multi-disciplined project(s)
  • Knowledge in the use of appropriate codes of practice, standards and relevant sections of statutory documentation.
  • Knowledge in the use of design and assessment methods used within discipline
  • Competent in design safety/environmental requirements, procedures and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring delivery of all Piping deliverables using 3D CAD and associated applications used in discipline design work executed under the contract or project.
  • Create new piping material specifications as per project requirements.
  • Modify current piping material specifications as per project requirements.
  • Experience of codes and standards – BS/EN/ASME.
  • Ability to interpret relevant arrangement and assembly drawings whether internal or from other sources.
  • Maintain knowledge of current best practice in application of designer expertise across the design lifecycle, including customs and standards and ensure these are communicated to and embedded in project teams. Promote a culture of best practice in design expertise and provide leadership and assist in driving cultural development and change.
  • Maintain awareness of developments within the industry, particularly for techniques & tools, physical integration, bill of material controls & management of design maturity.
  • Exercise care for own health and safety and that of others as defined by Health and Safety legislation, adhere to endorsed Company policy, procedures and delegations (e.g. Health & Safety, Diversity & Inclusion, Performance & Development Reviews and Finance etc.) Ensure application of highest standards for health and safety in immediate area of responsibility and ensure all team members across engineering co-operate with respect to company standards about matters on health, safety and environment, ethics and behaviours.
  • Support the business winning process through input into or review of tender requirements, including estimates.

  • Experience/Qualifications/Skills;
  • Essential:
  • HNC minimum in a relevant discipline OR equivalent academic qualification
  • Proven exposure and detailed knowledge of Piping, with sound knowledge of other disciplines (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, and Structural). Good management skills and historical experience, working as a Piping Lead.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD tools, 2D and 3D
  • Knowledge of General Engineering Drawing Practice
  • Demonstrable experience in technical leading of a multi-disciplined design team
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to interface with other disciplines, customers and suppliers
  • Desirable:

  • Member of relevant Professional Institute
  • Breadth and depth of experience in a range of commercial or defence projects
