Thales are a large multinational engineering corporation with operations in the Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Security sectors.  This role is working on one of their high-profile London Underground programmes “4LM”.

Primary Purpose of the Role:

To lead the integration of fundamental subsystems, principally the Seltrac IS radio subsystem for the Four Lines Modernisation Project (4LM).

The Lead Radio Integration Engineer will use RF and IP networking engineering principals to lead the integration of the Seltrac radio subsystem, including:

  • Develop pragmatic integration and validation strategies to support the delivery of the radio subsystem and associated engineering solutions.
  • Managing the validation of the Seltrac IS radio subsystem to ensure that it meets the required availability, including creation of formal validation reports documenting the outcomes
  • Lead the investigation of radio subsystem fault analysis from test activities and revenue operations
  • Support the Radio Design Engineering team in the development of design solutions to ensure that the radio subsystem meets the expected requirements
  • Support the development of tools to improve the efficiency of radio based data analysis
  • Challenging or improving existing methodologies and procedures to create cost reductions and process efficiencies.
  • Acting as technical lead for internal/external stakeholder discussions at all levels
  • Providing technical leadership and day-to-day workload management to any direct reports in the delivery of the above activities

  • Key Responsibilities and Tasks

    The list below is not exhaustive. It is given as a guide of the expected duties of the grade.

  • Lead the investigation of Radio and DCS related test or operational failures.
  • Lead the validation of the radio subsystem against the Radio Validation Strategy requirements, including working closely with the Radio Design Engineering team in developing solutions where the validation criteria is not met.
  • Proposes temporary or permanent design modifications as required to assist in the integration, validation, testing or commissioning of the Seltrac Radio sub system, including associated IP networking functionality (DCS).
  • Supplement standard test procedures by creating additional engineering test procedures as required for integration purposes and/or formal validation in the field.
  • Create or update formal documentation, processes or reports related to the validation, test and integration activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications with relevant internal and external stakeholders to the benefit of the project.
  • Responsible for creating formal and informal integration and test strategies or procedures to support the integration of the CBTC radio subsystems and external interfaces.
  • Supporting work package estimates and descriptions based on knowledge of the work and project requirements, ensuring that solutions are at an optimum cost.
  • Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on knowledge of systems engineering.
  • Provide technical leadership and support within the team and as part of the larger integration and testing effort
  • Supervise direct reports, by defining their work, coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress and directing them on priorities.
  • More generally the individual requires:

  • Self-driven and able to effectively and independently manage their own and their teams workload
  • Comfortable interfacing and leading technical meetings with key stakeholders to gain approval of engineering strategies and technical solutions.
  • Keep abreast of technical developments in applicable engineering fields and railway signalling.
    1. Essential:

    2. Excellent knowledge of Wi-Fi (802.11) and more specifically Radio Frequency (RF) fundamentals and principles
    3. Knowledge of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, including IPsec encryption protocols
    4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to stakeholders at all levels including senior management, technical staff, and the customer
    5. Excellent time management skills. The ability to plan and maintain the execution of your tasks to an agreed schedule.
    6. Ability to lead technical discussions and reviews with stakeholders at all levels
    7. Ability to write technical reports and documents to an appropriate professional standard.
    8. Fluent in Microsoft Office
    9. Desirable:

    10. Detailed technical knowledge of the Thales Seltrac IS signalling product
    11. Ability to write/modify Bash/Shell scripts
    12. Working with web based data analytics and visualisation tools, i.e. Grafana, Kibana or equivalent
    13. Essential

    14. Significant experience leading the integration of RF and/or Wi-Fi equipment to meet specific signal coverage requirements
    15. Experience of working within the ‘V Model’ systems engineering framework
    16. Desirable

    17. Experience working within a LU environment
    18. Experience of developing validation and test strategies

    26. Qualifications

      Essential

    27. HNC/HND/Degree level qualified in a scientific, technical or engineering discipline, or equivalent
    28. Desirable

    29. Chartered Engineer (or working towards)
    30. IRSE Licence / Membership
    31. Other technical and/or management related qualifications
